First Time Jet Skiing? Here’s What to Expect

If it’s your first time renting a jet ski, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervous energy. That’s totally normal—and at Woody’s Watersports in John’s Pass, we make sure your first ride is smooth, safe, and unforgettable. Whether you’re brand new to jet skiing or just haven’t ridden in a while, here’s everything you can expect when you hit the water with us.

A Warm Welcome & Easy Check-In

From the moment you arrive at our Madeira Beach location, you’ll be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff. Our check-in process is quick and simple, especially if you book online in advance through woodyswatersports.com. We’ll confirm your reservation, check your ID, and get you fitted for a life jacket.

Jet Ski Orientation & Safety Briefing

No experience? No problem. Before you leave the dock, we’ll guide you through:

  • How to operate the jet ski

  • Basic rules of the water

  • Local riding zones and boundaries

  • Safety tips and what to do in case of emergency

Florida state law requires all drivers born in or after 1988 to complete a boater safety course. If needed, we’ll help you get certified before you ride—it only takes about 15 minutes online.

What It’s Like on the Water

Once you’re ready, it’s time to ride! The learning curve is short and within minutes, most first-timers are zipping across the waves with total confidence.

Expect:

  • Calm waters near the dock for practice

  • Open space to go at your own pace

  • Clear water, warm sun, and probably a dolphin sighting or two!

Tips For A Great Ride:

✔️ Wear secure sunglasses with a strap
✔️ Apply reef-safe sunscreen before heading out
✔️ Bring a waterproof pouch for phones or GoPros
✔️ Hydrate before and after your ride
