Tips for Staying Hydrated in Florida This Summer
There’s no doubt about it – it gets hot out there in Florida! While we love our warm weather, staying hydrated can be a challenge sometimes. Dehydration can lead to a variety of ailments, ranging from headaches to life-threatening conditions, so it’s important to avoid it!
Here are some tips for staying hydrated this summer in Florida:
Drink plenty of water
This one may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t drink enough water in the summertime. When the mercury rises, it’s important to hydrate even more, because your body loses water through perspiration.
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water at least an hour before going outside, and then drinking six to 12 ounces every 15 or 20 minutes while active. Note that if you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, so remember to carry a water bottle with you at all times if you’re outdoors.
Lay off the boozy drinks
If you’re planning to spend the day outdoors, skip that second margarita. Alcohol reduces the amount of anti-diuretic hormone your body naturally produces, causing your body to retain salt and leading to dehydration.
Take frequent breaks
When you’re active, rest for about ten minutes out of every hour, even if you don’t feel tired.
